ALARMING STATS

In 2010 there were 250,000 women sexually assaulted and 1 out of 6 women are sexually assaulted in their life time.

According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, which includes crimes that were not reported to the police, 232,960 women in the U.S. were raped or sexually assaulted in 2006. That’s more than 600 women every day.6 Other estimates, such as those generated by the FBI, are much lower because they rely on data from law enforcement agencies. A significant number of crimes are never even reported for reasons that include the victim’s feeling that nothing can/will be done and the personal nature of the incident.

The U.S. Department of Justice recently reported that one in four college women will be victims of sexual assault by the time she graduates, though officials say that statistic might be higher.

Why PepperSpray Protection: Reasons Why
Woman Should Carry Pepper Spray

By:Bill Valentine, PhD, Self Defense Coach
There are many reasons women should carry pepper spray. Your personal safety is the most important thing. Today you need to think about educating yourself about personal safety, learning moves that might help save your life, become aware, escaping, fighting back, and other things that can help you.

The most important thing you should think about is your personal safety. You should educate yourself about self defense and learn a few basic self defense moves too. Self defense is extremely important and it can cost you your life if you don’t know a few basic tips to help you. It is best to learn a few different physical self-defense moves that you can use in any circumstance that you might feel threatened, or if someone makes you feel unsafe or violates your space.

The most important thing is awareness. Many women are not aware of their surroundings at times and this is what costs them their life. It is important to be aware of what is going on around you at all times. When you pull into a parking lot to park the car you should look around for people in front and behind you. Before you choose a spot to park you should look around and see if you see anyone. When you are done shopping and walking back to your car you should be sure you don’t see anyone lurking near your vehicle or following you in the parking lot. If you do, act as if you forgot something and walk back to the store. Always be aware of your surroundings and if there are people around you that make you feel uncomfortable you need to do something about it.

The most important thing when you think about personal safety is your 6th sense. Many women often have a bad feeling about something initially and they continue to move forward with what they are doing. If you have a bad feeling about a person or a situation it is important to trust that feeling. Any time that you feel unsafe in a situation you need to remedy your feeling. Your intuition is usually right and if you feel unsafe, even for just a second, you probably are.
An important thing to consider about self defense is that it can take a long time to learn it. Some women consider taking karate classes but this is actually a long-term commitment to really learn the moves. The problem with these classes is that women who take them find that when they are really in an actual dangerous and unsafe situation they do not perform the complicated moves they learned. The time is wasted on the classes and they really don’t work. Danger happens fast and you have to be able to react quickly. What you learn in a class doesn’t kick in fast enough to actually use until it is beyond the point where you could have used it. The next best thing you can do is carry pepper spray on your key ring for your personal protection. This makes it perfect because it is already in your hand and only takes less than two seconds to be able to spray someone with it. There is no thinking involved.

Escaping is important. You don’t want a stranger to take you into a dark alley or shove you into the trunk of a car. You may never make it home to your family again. If you are in a public place and a stranger tells you to come with them or they will kill you it is important to yell and fight back now. This will be your only chance. The person most likely won’t kill you in public but when they get you wherever it is they want to take you they probably will. Pepper spray is the best way to distract a predator from hurting you in public. You can spray them in the face. Pepper spray is very distressing to experience which makes it a great self defense weapon. OC will induce coughing, choking and nausea, as well as dilating the eye capillaries resulting in temporary blindness. The mucous membranes will swell to prevent all but life support breathing causing the assailant to be temporarily incapacitated. You will gain precious time to get away safely.

Fighting back is also something you need to consider. You must fight back any time someone touches you and they shouldn’t. Shout as loud as you can and make a scene. Break a window and make a scene, if possible. Never let someone try to take you by gun or knife point without a fight. The more of a scene you cause will cause them to actually run away because they don’t want to go to jail.

Pepper spray is one of the most important things you can have on you at all times as a woman in the world today. It is a sad truth that you cannot trust your environment anymore. You must be aware of your surroundings at all times. Never let anyone touch you or invade your space and if you feel threatened you can spray them with your pepper spray and use it as a chance to get away. Why Pepper Spray protection for women? This is the best defense mechanism you can have.

A little Pepper Spray history lesson

Although the use of pepper spray can’t be dated back too long ago, but history reveals that red chili pepper was being used for self defense in ancient India and China. In ancient India, it was not as popular as it was in China. Chinese people and even warriors had their own innovative method of using this spice; and it included wrapping grounded cayenne in rice papers so that they could throw it at the faces of their enemies, opponents, or intruders. It was accepted as a weapon of choice for self defense because of its ability to incapacitate a person temporarily. A secret martial art society of people in ancient Japan called the Ninjas has been using grounded pepper for disabling their opponents for a long time. Historical evidence reveals that in the Tukagawa Empire era in Japan, the police used a weapon called the “metsubishi.” Metsubishi was, basically, a box consisting of chili pepper and the police used to use this box for blowing hot pepper into the eyes of people who were found guilty of some crime. There is even historical evidence of the use of chilies in Mexico that dates back to 7000 BC. According to the evidence collected, Mexican Indians were cultivating peppers in 5500 BC. Some of the types of pepper grown during that time include chiltecpin, jalape–o, ancho, paprika, serrano, cayenne pepper, as well as bell pepper in different colors. The fact about whether they used these different peppers for self defense or as weapons of defense during those times is unknown. Some of the more recent examples of the use of pepper as a weapon can be dated back to the 14th and 15th century when slavery was rampant.

Personal Savers Pepper SprayChili pepper was used not only as a weapon of self defense but also for treating wounds and during torture. As a matter of fact, pepper became a popular method for torturing people, criminals, and slaves. It was only in the 1980’s that pepper began being used as pepper spray and became a legalized non-lethal weapon. Law enforcement agencies also recognized pepper spray as a non-lethal weapon capable of incapacitating just about anyone. This was also the time when the postal workers started using pepper sprays against dogs and other pets.

Civilian Use Of Pepper Sprays Pepper spray is also known as oleoresin of capsicum (OC) spray and it was actually introduced not by the lawmakers but by the US Postal service in the 1980’s. The FBI was able to endorse it as an official chemical agent only in 1987 and it took another 4 years before it could be legally accepted by the law enforcement agency. But when it comes to civilian use, not all brands or types of pepper sprays can be used. There are some states in the US and some countries as well that forbid the use of pepper sprays by civilians. For example: it is illegal to use pepper spray, mace or tear gas in Canada. In the US, there are two types of pepper sprays that can be used by civilians and they are CS (orthochlorobenzalmalononitrile) and CN (chloroacetophenone). There is a third type called the CR but it has not yet been recommended for civilian use. The fourth option is the standard pepper spray that has been made from an extract of chili peppers used for making oleoresin capsicum. The process basically ensures that the main ingredients, which cause irritation in the eyes is gained from the chili. OC or oleoresin capsicum is insoluble in water and is normally dispersed using aerosol cans. The pepper spray was actually imported from Canada to the US and it was being used in Canada by civilians as a bear repellent spray and not against human intruders. The modern day civilian pepper sprays are safe as well as legal weapons for self defense. Considered to be extremely effective, it has become quite handy for women the world over and they can use it to repel the actions of single or multiple attackers. It has worked wonders for civilians because when sprayed on the face of the attacker/s, it can cause intense pain for as long as 45 minutes including swelling and burning in the eyes.

About Personal Savers

The idea for Personal Savers was born in 1995 by Derek Downing and Chad Smith, two national and world champion professional inline speed skaters. While training on the open roads in Georgia, they always came across unruly drivers and stray dogs nipping at their feet. Derek's father David Downing owned an in house pepper spray business that sold to police forces worldwide which helped spark the idea of the original Wrist Saver.

The original Wrist Saver was a crude version of itself today but the concept to keep people safe while being active was born. That idea grew into an actual company, but with the strains of traveling for competitions the business was put on hold...
